The best of my thinking

Thanks to the VIEWS Project, I gave a talk at the Writing As Visual Experience conference last month in Cambridge that was and is currently the best representation of my thinking (and the most fun any speaker ever had while suffering from COVID).

The talk was titled “Consider the Mermaid,” which may not make any sense until you’ve seen the talk–at the conclusion of which I presented Pippa Steele with my carving of the aforementioned mermaid, a detail from a 19th-century Javanese manuscript. Trust me, it all makes sense in the end.

Many, many ideas here, a good number of them original or at least surprising.
